TEACHER PREPARATION FOR SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS
Who Should Attend
Administrators, educators, and support staff.
This is the first level of a three-level training, starting from basic knowledge to more in-depth and advanced learning modules. Each level involves a two-day sessions.
This is a three-level training series, starting from basic knowledge of English Learners to understanding instructional practices to improve student academic achievement. Each course is a two-day session.
Level 1: Research based understanding of second language acquisition, including structures, forms and functions of both oral and written language.
Level 2: Learning Modules: Principles and design of standards-based assessment for Second Language Learners; formal and informal assessment that informs teacher driven instruction including cultural and linguistic biases with respect to second language learners.
This class explores assessment for English Learners within the overall context that all students are language learners acquiring grade level academic language. Teachers will be able to develop a comprehensive assessment plan. Academic vocabulary is key to developing appropriate assessments. Assessment is redefined into as, for and of learning.
Level 3: Learning Modules: Literacy development and instructional strategies to promote academic achievement of Second Language Learners; implementation of effective teaching strategies; differentiated instruction, progress monitoring/use of rubrics to assess student learning.
This class is designed to prepare teachers with a variety of instructional strategies to implement in content classes and language development classes to build student success. Utilizing the Structured Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®). The teacher will be able to write content and language objectives for students, discuss the eight components and thirty features of the SIOP® and incorporate these into daily lessons. Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) strategies will also be explored and incorporated into daily lessons.
*The remaining levels will be offered later during 2017-18.

About the Presenter
Ms Atkins is the Director of Educational Services for Banning Unified School District. Ms. Adkins has 23 years of public education as a high school Spanish teacher, English as a Second Language teacher, high school assistant principal, middle school assistant principal, elementary assistant principal, high school principal, continuation high school principal, and director of educational services. In addition to her experience in public education, she has three years as an alternative teacher for expelled students within private schools and the California Youth Authority.
At Banning Unified School District, Ms. Adkins is charged with all administrative training, teacher training and all curricular decisions for instruction. She has a diverse background in curriculum and instruction; professional development, teacher training, elementary and secondary education, professional learning communities utilizing data to inform decisions to support improved student achievement. Ms. Adkins uses her experiences to enhance the teaching and learning environment in order to achieve academic success for all students.
Ms. Adkins received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree from California State University, San Bernardino.
Hours of Instruction
Each Level Course is 15 hours of instruction over two full consecutive days with an opportunity for follow-up activities for the purposes of implementation of learned content.

Fees and Cancellation
Cost: 1,390 AED until February 6, 2018 (subject to space availability).
Cancellations received by February 6, 2018 will be subject to a 200 AED fee.
