Who Should Attend

General and Special Education Teachers, Administrators, and Instructional Support Staff.

Session Description

This is the first level of a four-level training, starting from basic knowledge to more in-depth and advanced learning modules. Each level involves a two-day session.

Level 1*: Learning Modules: Legalities impacting special needs students, characteristics of special education categories, pre-referral services, assessment tools, specialized academic instruction, other related support services, accommodations and/or modifications needed to access learning, assistive technology, accountability and data collection.

* The remaining three levels are planned to be offered later during the 2017-18 year.

Level 2: Learning Modules: In-depth knowledge of special education categories, programs, and services involving students who have either mild-to-moderate or moderate-to-severe functioning levels; understanding the dynamics and considerations when addressing the needs of each specific disability group. This particular training is a more detailed application of the Level 1 training.

Level 3: Learning Modules: Writing measureable goals and objectives; writing comprehensive student instructional plans; aligning curriculum to common core standards; implementation of effective teaching strategies; differentiated instruction, progress monitoring/use of rubrics to assess student learning.

Level 4: Learning Modules: Universal design of learning; school-wide positive behavioral intervention and supports; effective disciplinary practices; strategies for school success through organizational skill -building; cultural proficiency and sensitivity; appreciative inquiry – recognizing the best in students.

Training Goals

To enhance the effectiveness of teaching to students with special needs within the most inclusive environments, a variety of teaching methodologies, scientifically proven instructional strategies, updated information, and helpful innovative resources will be provided to workshop participants. This series of on-going training will allow educators to work together as collaborative teams in learning and modeling more ways to enable students to achieve success.

About the Presenters

Dr. Caryl Miller

Dr. Miller has a broad range of educational experiences for over 40 years as a general and special education teacher as well as a special education administrator at different levels including school sites, district offices, and regional consortiums. Upon retirement in 2009, Dr. Miller has worked as an educational consultant for small, medium, and large school districts in the areas of program improvement, administrative coaching, as well as mentoring teachers and paraprofessionals/instructional assistants working with students with disabilities. She has conducted approximately 50 formal special education program/fiscal studies, visiting over 2,000 classrooms. Dr. Miller has participated on numerous intervention teams for program assistance to improve the quality of instruction for students with special needs.

Ms. Claudia Gray

Ms. Gray has over thirty years of experience as an educator both in Canada and the United States. She has taught at the elementary, secondary and university levels. She has been the special education administrator in school districts and regional consortiums. Following her retirement in 2009, Ms. Gray has worked as an educational consultant serving school districts in areas such as program reviews, needs assessments, coaching and mentoring. Ms. Gray is an accomplished professional development trainer, presenter and facilitator. She has a broad array of experience with many research based programs and resources, both academic and behavioral, to improve outcomes for all students.

Hours of Instruction

Each Level Course is 15 hours of instruction over two full consecutive days with an opportunity for follow-up activities for the purposes of implementation of learned content.

Courses may be taken as a series or separately as educators may be at different levels of experience and expertise.

Fees and Cancellation

Cost: 1,390 AED until December 29, 2017 (subject to space availability).
1,550 AED after December 29, 2017.
For those registering for the first day only – 765 AED.

Cancellations received by December 29, 2017 will be subject to a 200 AED fee.
Cancellations received after December 29, 2017 and “No Shows” will be subject to the full registration fee.
