Who Should Attend
District and site administrators, master teachers, teacher leaders, project managers, and those who informally or formally lead and/or supervise others.
In this half-day session, participants will learn to apply the internationally renowned theory of Situational Leadership that revolutionized how to effectively supervise others. The authors, Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard (author of One Minute Manager), popularized the use of this innovative theory. In this workshop, participants will learn the actual theory, and pragmatically apply it – both in general and with a specific focus on those supervisees each participant supervises. In small groups, participants will collaborate with one another to strengthen the work of each participant when applying this theory to specific (but anonymous) person/s a participant supervises.
By the end of this workshop, each participant will have learned the basics of the Theory of Situational Leadership, realized how to use the theory in simple and effective ways, and pragmatically applied the theory’s concepts to specific persons supervised by each participant. Participants will be able to use the principles of this theory to develop higher capabilities among many persons the participant currently supervises, as well as to help those professionals who still have inadequate capabilities leave the participant’s organization. Participants will use the principles of this theory to confidentially assess their own areas of strengths and weaknesses in order to develop an informed plan for their own professional development after the workshop.
About the Presenter
David Murphy has been a school site administrator for over ten years and a superintendent for over twenty years. He completed doctoral coursework at Stanford University, where he studied evaluation theory and structures for effective professional supervision and learning. He has used and taught these principles of effective supervision to many administrators at both the site and district level, including during his recent four years as a faculty member at Santa Clara University. As part of this work, he served as a major coach of administrators in the Effective School Principals Program. His use of these evaluation and supervisory principles has helped many professionals promote to higher positions in accord with their career aspirations; helped develop professional capabilities of many professionals; and in a collaborative way, also caused some employees, who were still deficient, to resign from their organization.
Mr. Murphy has been elected to several state wide leadership positions in California, including as President, State Association for the Improvement of Secondary Education; Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) State Chair, Secondary Education; and ACSA State Chair, School to Career.
