EFFECTIVE ACTION PLANNING FOR MAJOR PROJECTS

Who Should Attend

District and site administrators, master teachers, teacher leaders, project managers, and those who informally or formally lead and/or supervise others to accomplish projects/programs.

Session Description

In this half-day session, participants will learn to use the simplest form of an excel spread sheet to comprehensively plan projects and programs that involve many persons who are each responsible for the same or different programs, projects, tasks, and goals. The training will enable participants to integrate a great variety of programs and projects involving the same organization so that the principal/CEO can know at a glance what very specific activities are to be accomplished, for which project/program/event, by which people, and by what deadline dates. The training will enable the principal/CEO to help his/her leadership team know what the others are doing and share responsibility for leading the entire organization.

Training Goals

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Use the concepts, rationale, and specifics of action planning.
  2. Explain the concepts, rationale, and specifics of action planning to those the participants supervise or organize.
  3. Use a simple form of an excel spreadsheet as an essential tool for smoothly organizing all of the major activities and events of an organization, including who is responsible for what specific tasks by which specific dates.
  4. Create one system of action planning for an organization that can easily be re-used each year for all of those events, programs and projects that recur each year.
  5. Teach persons being supervised this method of action planning so that those persons are better empowered to effectively plan and organize others to smoothly and efficiently accomplish a plan, project, program, event, etc.
  6. Identify each detail of action needed for a program, project, and event so that all details are clearly communicated to others and effectively guide those involved in the plan, program, project, and/or event.
  7. Establish a clear, detailed and proactive system of accountability for each person involved in a plan, project, program or event for an organization.
  8. See and practice creating a collaborative system of action planning for all of those involved in managing or leading components of an organization.

About the Presenter

Mr. David J. Murphy

David Murphy has been a school site administrator for over ten years and a superintendent for over twenty years. He completed doctoral coursework at Stanford University, where he studied evaluation theory and structures for effective professional supervision and learning. He has used and taught these principles of effective supervision to many administrators at both the site and district level, including during his recent four years as a faculty member at Santa Clara University. As part of this work, he served as a major coach of administrators in the Effective School Principals Program. His use of these evaluation and supervisory principles has helped many professionals promote to higher positions in accord with their career aspirations; helped develop professional capabilities of many professionals; and in a collaborative way, also caused some employees, who were still deficient, to resign from their organization.

Mr. Murphy has been elected to several state wide leadership positions in California, including as President, State Association for the Improvement of Secondary Education; Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) State Chair, Secondary Education; and ACSA State Chair, School to Career.
